How To: Make A Video From Your Photos

That’s our National Day tribute video. :)

To make your own video out of still pictures (also known as “stop-motion video”), simply follow these easy steps:

1) Set your camera on continuous shooting mode on your DSLR. You can also find such a mode in your point-and-shoot camera; it’s called “burst mode.”

2) Once ready, press the shutter button and hold it.

3) Download your pictures to your computer. Use video editing software to string your pictures together into a video clip. The PC comes pre-installed with Windows Movie Maker and the Mac comes with iMovie.

Things To Note:

  • Depending on your camera, shots might be taken continously as long as the shutter button is held down or the camera might take a set number of shots, after which you will need to release and depress the shutter button again. So experiment or check your manual!
  • Auto-focusing can disrupt continuous shooting. So you might want to consider switching to manual focus if your camera has one and keeping your subject approximately at the same distance from the camera without changing the focal length.
  • There is a limit to the number of shots that can be taken in this mode if you hold down the shutter button continuously, because the images are stored in a buffer memory before being written onto the media card. Continuous shooting is also a drain on batteries and can fill up a card pretty quickly.
  • If you’re using flash, the flash may not fire each time because it takes some time to charge up.
  • When creating the video, you can edit your pictures before creating the clip. You may want to use the “Batch” mode in your photo editing software.
  • And finally, don’t forget to add music to complete your video!
